On Sunday, a residential neighborhood in Palm Beach, Florida witnessed a devastating scene where a private business jet crashed into pieces on the ground, leaving all nine passengers dead who were flying in it. The aircraft was a Learjet 60, which crashed near Cresthaven in Palm Beach County around 12:50 p.m. EST. People living nearby reported that they could only see flames and scattered debris across a six-lane road.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Learjet 60 departed from Austin, Texas, and its arrival destination was the Bahamas. The authorities confirmed that nobody on the streets was injured or killed apart from the nine passengers, including the crew members flying in it.
Cockpit Crew Reported Severe Weather Conditions Before the Crash
The air traffic control noted the final moments of the flight and also revealed that the crew did mention that they were facing weather problems right before the incident.
The crew member mentioned problems like moderate turbulence and said that they were managing ice buildup on the aircraft, and apart from this, there were problems with precipitation and they needed to climb.
After all of this, the situation kept on getting worst. The crew mentioned that the aircraft was falling thousands of feet down per minute. An emergency declaration was also made after the reporting of the flight’s overspeeding and descending uncontrollably.
The last thing mentioned by the crew members was that “we’re out of time."
Dashcam Footage Captures the Moment of Impact
The incident got recorded through a dashcam of a car, where it showed that the aircraft, a Learjet, was falling vertically at a very high speed towards the residential area right before crashing into pieces.
The governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis, mentioned the footage as deeply disturbing and said that the aircraft crash seemed like a missile striking the ground. The aircraft directly hit the middle of the Military Trail withfalmes and aircraft debris spread all around that.
The Palm Beach County Fire Rescue announced a mass casualty incident and requested emergency help at the scene. Almost 600 residents were asked to evacuate from a nearby mobile home community during the incident.
There were some damages to the infrastructure in that area, which includes the water lines, and the officials have reported that the Military Trail will remain closed for at least 30 days.
FAA and NTSB Launch Investigation Into the Deadly Crash
The exact circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation. The FAA confirmed that the aircraft was a Learjet 60 and that it had been travelling from Austin to the Bahamas.
The whole investigation has taken place to understand the cause behind it. U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy mentioned that this incident was a horrific tragedy and also confirmed that the FAA was sending a team to assist the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).
The investigators will look into this matter and study all the flight data, weather conditions, and the available cockpit recordings to understand the reason behind this shocking accident.
