Overview of Dubai International Airport

Dubai Airport is located at a distance of just 4.70 km east of the city center of Dubai. Its strategic location makes it an intersecting point of Asia, Europe, and Africa, facilitating the maximum number of international flights and making it the busiest airport for international travelers. It serves as a hub for the Emirates, the UAE's flag carrier, and flydubai, which is the nation's biggest low-cost airline.

There are three Dubai Airport terminals for passengers. Terminal 2 is a smaller terminal on the other side of the runway, and the two main terminals, 1 and 3, are situated in close proximity, connected by the Dubai Metro. In addition to the gates and check-in, DXB is almost like a self-contained city, with duty-free stores, restaurants, hotels, spas, and lounges right inside the airport's terminals, and given that so many passengers are passing through, the airport also spends a great deal on the transport side with sleep lounges in the terminal, shower rooms, and fast inter-terminal transit. Although gradually, some traffic is expected to move to Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC) over the next few years, DXB will continue to be Dubai's major airport for the foreseeable future.

How to Get to Dubai Airport

Dubai Airport provides multiple options to its passengers. Choosing the best option comes down to three things: budget, how much luggage they are carrying, and how much time they have before flight. Here is a breakdown of the transportation options to reach the airport.

How to Get to Dubai Airport

Dubai Metro

The Dubai Metro Red Line is the cheapest and the quickest transportation option to reach the Dubai Airport. Both Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 have their own stations, which are directly linked through covered walkways. However, terminal 2 is not accessible via metro. The metro runs from 5:00 am to 12:00 am daily, with trips to Downtown Dubai taking under 30 minutes, and the train generally comes every 3 to 5 minutes. However, the metro only allows two pieces of suitcase and a handbag; thus, you should avoid this option if you are traveling with lots of luggage.

Taxi and Ride-Hailing

The RTA taxis are metered taxis that are available 24 hours a day and park in specific taxi ranks immediately outside the terminal. The cost of airport taxi fares begins a little higher than standard city fares to cover the airport surcharge, and a trip to Downtown Dubai from Terminal 1 or Terminal 3 will usually be $13-$20, with slightly higher fares from terminal 2, as it is an extra distance. Dubai has widely adopted car-free and Uber-style rides, and they have marked parking areas near every terminal, typically within the walkable distance from the arrivals hall.

RTA Bus

RTA buses also link between all three terminals and various locations in the city, including Terminal 2, at a lower cost, and provide a special interterminal bus service. This is another of the more economical ways to get to central Dubai from the airport, but it will take longer than traveling by Metro or taxi and won't be very suitable for those who have a tight connection.

Car Rental at Dubai Airport

Renting a car is the best choice for those who are looking to explore the city. The Dubai Airport has various brands of car rental at Dubai Airport, including Hertz, Avis, Sixt, Thrifty, Dollar, Europcar, and Budget. Most of the car rental brands have their counters in the arrivals areas of terminal 1 or terminal 3. The passengers will have to present their passport, valid driving license, credit card used to book the car, and international driving permit (depending on your nationality) to rent a car.

Airlines at Dubai International Airport

There are three passenger terminals at Dubai Airport, and each serves a different set of airlines. It is essential for the travelers to know about the terminal used by their airline to check in, decide the transport option, and board the flight on time. The boarding pass and the confirmation number will always list the terminal.

This terminal is not connected through the metro; therefore, the passengers must allow some extra time for transfer. The major carriers at Terminal 2 are as follows:

Dubai International Airport Parking

For drivers and drop-off, Dubai Airport parking facilities provide over 7,000 spaces in Terminal 1, Terminal 2, and Terminal 3. Dubai Airports transformed its parking system into a fully cashless model in January 2026, with its new partnership with Salik, the toll company of the UAE. The vehicles connected to a Salik account are now detected automatically upon entry and exit, fees are deducted the same way as a highway toll, and there is no need for ticket machines, pay stations, or exit barriers.

There are both Premium and Economy parking areas at each terminal. The airport parking in Dubai is divided into economy and premium parking; the shorter the walking distance, the closer to the terminal entrance the parking is. Short-stay rates are offered in time increments of a few minutes to a day, while long-stay parking is offered by the day for those who park their car for an extended period of time to go on a trip. A typical short stay is around this price, but it's prudent to visit Dubai Airports' website before embarking on your trip to get up-to-date pricing:

Duration T1 Premium T1 Economy T3 Premium T3 Economy
Up to 1 hour $8 $4 $10 $3
1–2 hours $10 $5 $13.50 $6
2–3 hours $15 $7 $16 $8
4–24 hours $34 $23 $40 $27

Multi-story parking is available at all Dubai Airport terminals, and Dubai Airports offers discounted rates during the season, so look out for offers that allow you to leave your car for a week or more, depending on the season, in advance of busy summer or holiday periods. Typically, parking can be booked ahead of time on the airport's official website or app, and it is possible to pay for the parking by card or digital wallet, even if there is no Salik account attached. The parking is free for two hours for people with a disability, and there are parking spaces outside the Dubai Airport departures where a grace period is offered before parking fees are applied. For those who want to stay longer than the night at a hotel, several of the nearby hotel parking areas may have cheaper rates for overnight parking and may also provide shuttles to the terminal.

Useful Services and Information

Several points should be noted to ensure a hassle-free journey into Dubai Airport, including visa requirements, baggage handling, and more.

Useful Services and Information

Passport Control & Visas

The conditions of entry are dependent on nationality. GCC citizens are permitted to enter with a national ID card, while many other countries with citizens, such as the UK, US, Canada, Australia, and the EU, are eligible to enter with a visa-free visit, which usually is valid for 30 days and can be extended. Passports need to be at least six months in date. Smart Gates are available to faster immigration clearance of eligible travelers with biometric passports. Please check with your airline or UAE immigration authorities before travelling.

Security & Customs

The security checking conforms to the international standard for liquids and electronics, and lines usually clear fairly rapidly. AED 3,000 duty-free can be brought on board as a gift, along with tobacco and alcohol for personal consumption. Declare cash or valuables exceeding specified amounts to prevent duty problems.

Baggage

If your checked luggage is not found, check at the baggage services desk and provide a report and get a tracking reference. Dnata is responsible for baggage handling, where bags are removed from jet skimmers in advance for connecting flights. There are free trolleys throughout the airport.

Special Assistance

Passengers with limited mobility can seek special assistance at the airport by contacting the airline. The passengers must inform the respective airline at least 48 hours before the flight to get the special assistance. Additionally, to facilitate the passengers with disabilities, the airport has implemented inclusive design across all guest touchpoints and facilities.

Safety Tips

Carry important documents and keep valuables with you, and have a digital backup of important documents. Alcohol is only sold to people 21 years of age or older, and avoid taking photos of government buildings or place of airport security. Take additional time on public holidays and during peak travel times, and only book into metered taxis or apps that are recognized.

Dubai Airport Maps

The Dubai Airport map is available on its website and mobile app providing details on the gates, lounges, shops, restaurants and services terminal-wise. Useful as a reference to help plan your route from check-in to security and to your gate — especially in the larger buildings of Terminal 1 and Terminal 3, where it can take 15 minutes or more to walk from security to some gates.

Dubai Airport Lounges

Many Dubai airport lounges exist, but one is unlike the others—not for the airline or ticket class it serves, but for what it does for all travelers.

Al Majlis Lounge

Al Majlis is an excellent VIP service for all travellers, irrespective of class or airline, and has dedicated facilities close to both Terminal 1 and 3. All check-ins, immigration, security, and baggage collection are conducted by a personal assistant who passes them on to you while you wait in a private Dubai airport lounge, built around the spirit of traditional Arab hospitality and modern luxury. Seeking privacy and speed rather than economy, private transport between the lounge and your aircraft or the terminal is also a part of the service.

Other Lounges

There are many Dubai airport lounges, which are either operated by an airline or are functioning independently inside the airport premises. You will find these lounges across the terminals.

  • Emirates Lounges: First and business class lounges throughout Terminal 3 on Concourses A, B, and C with a dedicated wine and cigar lounge for first class and complimentary spa treatments.

  • Marhaba and Ahlan Lounges: open to passengers of any airline/any seat (including Priority Pass); located on all terminals and available with buffet or self-service meals, business facilities, a child's area, and more.

  • Sleep 'n Fly / Sleepover Lounges: private pods and family cabins in Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 for a one-hour power nap down to a full night's sleep, for travellers with long layovers.

  • Timeless Spa and Game Space: special areas of wellness and gaming for guests waiting in line for their flights.
