Miami, November 1, 2026—American Airlines, which suspended its services to Haiti in 2024, has now resumed service to the country. It operates a daily nonstop flight from Miami International Airport (MIA) to Cap-Haitien International Airport (CAP). The first flight, which took off on Sunday, November 1, was entirely staffed by the Haitian crew members who speak and understand Creole. With this return, Haiti becomes the 100th destination of the airline in this region.
A Crew With Personal Ties to the Route
The inaugural flight to Haiti was led by Captain Oliver Jean. The crew members that were a part of this historic moment were Birline Vernet, Patrick Casimir, Daphnee Ferdinand, Stricker Dilhomme, and Naromie Moussignac. The airline said that the choice of crew members describes its long relationship with Haiti and their commitment to serve the passengers in their local language to enhance their travel experience.
What the Service Offers
The route will be served by the Boeing 737 aircraft. Since Miami is one of the most connected domestic and international hubs, the passengers can further continue their journey to more than 90 U.S. cities. For instance, the travelers from New York and Orlando, which has a large Haitian community, can now travel to Haiti with just one stop in between.
According to American Airlines, Haiti is the largest country by travel demand, and yet no U.S. airline is operating flights to the region. A survey shows that South Florida has the largest population of Haitian Americans, and probably that is why Miami has been finalized as the gateway. American started the flight service to Haiti first in 2024, but they discounted it due to some security concerns.
The route serves Cap-Haïtien, the country’s second-largest city, in the north. It does not include Port-au-Prince, where U.S. flight restrictions had been in place earlier this year.
A Milestone in a Centennial Year
Cap-Haitien becomes the 100th destination across Mexico, the Caribbean, and Latin America. Maracaibo, Venezuela, holds the 99th place in July 2026, when the service began. Also, the airline became the first airline to reconnect Caracas and the United States after seven years with its nonstop flight between Miami and Caracas. The airline has also announced a direct flight to Bacelona, which is planned to launch on January 15, 2027.
Executives said the milestone reflects the airline’s history and its reach in the region. They also stressed the importance of air links to communities in South Florida.
Miami Keeps Growing as a Hub
Miami is the most connected international hub for American Airlines, operating over 400 flights daily to more than 170 destinations across 46 countries in the world. The airline is planning to make major changes in Concourse D and bring a new flagship lounge and a larger Admirals Club at gate D30.
