Southwest Airlines Overhauls Rapid Rewards

Southwest Airlines Overhauls Rapid Rewards With New Elite Status Tiers

Southwest Airlines is reshaping its Rapid Rewards loyalty programs by bringing in new elite status tiers and modifying the frequent flyer reward system. These new variations will come into being on January 1, 2027, which will replace the current reward system A-List and A-List Preferred tiers with Silver, Gold, and the latest top-tier Platinum status.

Three Elite Tiers With New Qualification Rules

Following the new reward system in Southwest Airlines, the A-list members will be shifted to Silver status, whereas A-List Preferred members will be shifted to Gold. Platinum, the latest tier, will be considered as the highest tier.

Passengers can become the members of the tier system through Tier Qualifying Points (TQPs) or eligible flights. Silver needs 35,000 TQPs or 25 qualifying flights. Gold needs 65,000 TQPs or 50 flights. Platinum needs 14,000 TQPs or a complete 100 qualifying flights. Passengers can also get one TQP for every dollar spent on Southwest co-branded Chase credit cards.

There will be some modifications in points bonuses as well, where members of the Silver tier will get a 40% bonus, Gold members will get a 60% bonus, and Platinum members will get a 120% bonus on points, which they will earn through traveling.

Boarding Benefits and Milestone Rewards

With some changes being made in the tier system, passengers will also see new modifications in the boarding privileges. Members of the Silver tier will board in Group 1, members of Gold will be seated ahead of Group 1, and Platinum members will be seated before the Gold members.

Southwest Airlines is benefiting its passengers by bringing in new rewards if the passengers are reaching certain milestones. On completing 15 qualifying flights or earning 20,000 points, members will get to choose between 2,000 Rapid Rewards points and two preferred seat coupons. If the members have reached 95,000 points or 75 qualifying flights, they will receive three Companion Pass trips.

The Companion Pass in Southwest Airlines allows a passenger to fly with a fellow partner without paying for their ticket, taxes and fees will still apply.

The current members can still keep their benefits until their current terms expire and the new rules will come into being in 2027.

Southwest Responds to a Changing Airline Industry

There are other major changes coming up at Southwest, which also includes the end of open seating, and there are some changes being made to its baggage policy. New lounges are coming up with Chase, and they will be located in four U.S. cities.

Now Southwest has bigger plans of bringing a big shift in the industry by evolving loyalty programs and engaging the customers with new deals so that they can spend more with the airlines. For example, United Airlines is planning to get rid of different flight segments to get into the line to qualify as an elite status next year.
