The latest cuts are transatlantic. WestJet announced last week that it will discontinue service on three European routes due to rising fuel prices, which is making it difficult for the airline to remain profitable on these transatlantic routes.
Halifax to Copenhagen (YHZ–CPH): The airline commenced the operation in May 2026 and had to shut down in September.
Halifax to Madrid (YHZ–MAD): WestJet made its debut to Madrid in summer 2026, and the high fuel prices forced the suspension of the operation.
Toronto Pearson to Glasgow (YYZ–GLA): The airline discontinued the service in 2022 and then returned in May 2026 after a long time, lasting for less than a year this time.
The airline is still operating on the Toronto-Edinburgh route, which is just an hour from Glasgow.
Cuba has the largest list of suspended flights. WestJet suspended its operation at seven Cuban destinations, including Cayo Coco, Cienfuegos, Cayo Largo del Sur, Havana, Holguin, Santa Clara, and Varadero. And the airline has not cleared the return date; it says, "All flights to Cuba have been suspended until further notice." Also, Air Transit and Air Canada have completely shut down their operations for an indefinite period. The major reasons behind the suspension are fuel shortages, frequent power cuts, disruption in the transport, and food scarcity. Canadian travelers are shifting to Mexico and the Dominican Republic for vacation.
The list also includes several smaller route reductions. WestJet discontinued the service on the Montreal to San Andres Island (Columbia) route in March. Additionally, the flights from Vancouver to Hawaii and Lihue (United States) are also canceled in April.
Calgary to Guadalajara, which was the first nonstop flight to any Mexican city from Canada launched in December 2025, is scheduled to make its final departure on October 18.
WestJet has also ended the flight service on two domestic destinations—Lethbridge and Medicine Hat in Alberta, the flights used to operate from Calgary. There was not enough passenger demand that led the airline to shut down the operation on June 24, 2026.
